Founded in 2002, we started as a help desk for latchkey kids. The Founder built a team that offered advice to students who seemed lost and lacked family support. Today, we provide a broad range of assistance. We offer monthly groceries, lunch pocket money and cooked dinners. Our signature program, Grant-A-Wish, helps needy students with necessities for education, health and basic living. We have thus provided spectacles, hearing aids, sports shoes or equipment, book vouchers and household items. Even fumigation services.

COVID-19 has impacted different strata of society unequally. Many low-income families with children are greatly affected by COVID-19, such as reduced income or loss of employment. Children’s Wishing Well has extended our help to as many children and their families as possible during this challenging period, even those registered under other social service agencies. Here are some of the services we are providing island-wide during COVID-19, including during the circuit breaker period:

1. Living essentials and debts repayment

We provide a budget to help very low-income families buy furniture, electrical appliances, and/or payment of debts, up to a certain limit per family. These families should have at least one school-going child under MOE FAS, and PCI < $300.

2. Reach For The Stars (Grocery)

The ongoing pandemic has caused many of our beneficiaries to face increasing challenges. Many of their parents have lost their jobs or face significant reduction in their income. We hope to ease their financial burdens by supporting them with short term groceries assistance where the family will be given vouchers to support the family’s household and daily necessities. The donation will be disbursed on a monthly basis to the families in the form of groceries vouchers, usually from NTUC Fairprice or Sheng Siong.

3. IT Support for Home-Based Learning

We provide laptops or tablets with broadband access (built-in SIM cards) to children who have no access to devices for their Home-Based Learning (HBL).

4. Hot Meals

We provide cooked lunch for dine-in or take away during normal operation times and take away dinner during Ramadan period. This is to ensure that no disadvantaged child goes hungry, and they have access to at least one healthy and delicious meal a day.

5. Reach For The Stars (Adult)

Many of our beneficiaries’ parents are uneducated, unskilled, and employed in odd-jobs or low-wage jobs.

During COVID-19, many of them lost their jobs and saw severe reduction of their income. We hope for the parents to be trained in relevant, certified courses under accredited service providers to enable them to be more employable. This would give them the means to escape the poverty trap as they would be able to find more stable, higher-paying jobs.
